ABSTRACT

This work is focused on the working and plainting of Ampelodesmos mauritanicus among the rural communities of the Monti Aurunci (Central Italy), where this material is known as stramma. It is traditionally exploited for the production of baskets, different types of bags and containers, wickers, brums and ropes along with several other daily-use items.

At the end of the ‘50s the exploitation of plant materials was substituted by the use of synthetic materials, yet the memory of this activity has been preserved, although nowadays only few are able to produce objects made of stramma.
